The Sculptures of Hidehisa Tachibana

　You don't pick figs

　from thorns,

she said. You can't gather grapes from wild roses, can you? You can tell what a tree is by its fruit.

　Is that so?

Yes. Because that's what it said in that book. She said that, and then went quiet.

I felt it was better not to look at your face. Then (and it felt like a very long time to me), you began to speak very carefully, as if catching your breath.

Whether God exists or not, I don't know, but flowers are always blooming somewhere—I know that much, and I think that feeling is enough.

When she said that, she squeezed my hand again.
