Camellia-pattern dry lacquer serving bowl

This serving bowl was created by Hideo Higashi using the dry lacquer (kanshitsu) technique.

Rather than using a wooden base, the form is created by layering multiple sheets of rare, coarse-woven hemp cloth and applying repeated coats of lacquer.

Against a deep black background, a camellia—one of Higashi’s signature motifs—is boldly depicted, creating a powerful scene alongside the thick trunk.

It feels surprisingly solid for an object made solely of hemp cloth, possessing a sense of profound weight when held in the hands.

This piece allows you to fully appreciate the unique sculptural qualities of dry lacquer and the rich expression of the lacquer itself.
